IE6 wont open new link window

One day all of a sudden IE6 stopped opening new windows by right clicking “Open Link in New Window”. After some research I found the solution, actually it seems like there is more than one cause to this problem, in my case the issue was solved by registering the urlmon.dll file with the command-line regsvr32.

POSSIBLE CAUSE
This erratic behavior may arise for one or more of the following reasons:
• An incorrect location for the Urlmon.dll file (Default) value setting in one or more of the following registry keys points:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{79eac9e0-baf9-11ce-8c82-00aa004ba90b}\InprocServer32]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{79eac9f1-baf9-11ce-8c82-00aa004ba90b}\InprocServer32]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{79eac9f2-baf9-11ce-8c82-00aa004ba90b}\InprocServer32]
This Behavior May Occur if you install a customized version of Internet Explorer that was created with the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) version 5.01 Service Pack 1 (SP1), 5.5 SP1, or 6.0. (more…)

More about Windows XP

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type ’systeminfo’. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type ’systeminfo > info.txt’. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run… and type ‘gpedit.msc’; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care — some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only). (more…)

Disable background services to improve performances

A background service is a program that is running invisibly to the user and can or cannot be essential to the operating system to work properly. Usually a service program is set to to start automatically at boot time, this behavior is controlled and can be altered by viewing the service list or by running the System Configuration utility.

We can achieve this by pressing the windows key + r or by clicking start, run. A small windows appears and we type msconfig (with or without the ending .exe) and Ok or Enter. This opens the System Configuration utility (MSconfig).
Otherwise, by typing services.msc we start the services manager listing all the available services on our machine with a brief description and the startup type and status.

As mentioned above, there are services that must not be disabled, windows would not behave correctly, on the other hand other services can safely be stopped and set to not start automatically. (more…)
